FDA Warns: Botulism Risk in Certain Castleberry Food Products

After four reported cases of botulism poisoning in Indiana, Castleberry Food Company is recalling several products manufactured at their Georgia plant and under various other brand names.

The recalled products include: hot dog chili sauce, beef stew, chili with and without beans, corned beef has, barbeque pork and barbecue sauce and Natural Balance canned dog food. You can find a complete listing on Castleberry's website.

Castleberry is cooperating with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to assure recall effectiveness.

Foodborne botulism is rare but serious and it can be triggered by consuming foods that contain botulinum toxin, a nerve toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Symptoms include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, or muscle weakness. If untreated, the illness may progress from head to toe, with paralysis of the face, arms, breathing muscles, trunk and legs.

Symptoms generally begin 18 to 36 hours after eating a contaminated food, but they can occur as early as six hours or as late as 10 days.

Anyone displaying possible symptoms should seek medial attention immediately.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

Lawsuit Filed Over Salmonella Outbreak at Food Festival

A couple that attended the Taste of Chicago claims they later became very sick. They were both hospitalized for four days. Now, they have filed what is believed to be the first lawsuit following a salmonella outbreak at the food festival.

The couple is suing Pars Cove Persian Cuisine whose booth carried hummus contaminated with salmonella bacteria, the suit claims. The couple suffered high fever, diarrhea and dehydration, said their attorney. Filed in Cook County Circuit Court, the suit seeks unspecified damages.

While health officials do believe the hummus was the cause of the outbreak, not all test results are back.

As of Monday, over 500 people claimed to have digestive problems after ingesting the hummus served at the Pars Cove booth. Fifty cases have been confirmed as salmonella and seventeen people were hospitalized.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

Two Killed in Two Seperate Accidents Within Hours of One Another

Two separate car accidents, Saturday, killed two people and seriously injured several others, authorities said.

In the first accident, an 18-year-old man was killed at approximately 1 a.m. in a three vehicle accident on Interstate highway 57, police said.

The crash happened as the vehicles traveled north on the highway, said Illinois State Police. A Land Rover and a Dodge Charger were traveling in the middle lane at a high rate of speed when the Land Rover crashed into the rear of the Charger, sending it crashing into a Mercedes traveling in the left lane.

A passenger was ejected from the Charger's back seat. He was transported to the hospital where he later died. Another backseat passenger, an 18-year-old Chicago man, was also transported to the hospital in serious condition.

Later that afternoon a 53-year-old Midlothian woman, passenger on a motorcycle, was killed in a six vehicle accident at a toll plaza on the Tri-State Tollway, police said.

In a chain reaction of crashes, a semitrailer hit a pickup truck which crashed with a passenger car. The car hit the motorcycle which then hit the car in front of it and that car crashed into another car. Several occupants were injured and transported to the hospital. None of the injuries appeared to be life threatening.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

FDA Warns Not to Eat Veggie Booty Snacks for Possible Salmonella Contamination

The FDA has issued a warning to discard any Veggie Booty Snacks they have in their home due to possible contamination with Salmonella Wandsworth, bacteria that cause gastrointestinal illness.

Generally, Veggie Booty Snacks are consumed by small children. Parents should watch their children and if they notice any signs of illness, immediately seek medical attention.

The FDA issued a warning based on 52 reports of illness across 17 states, beginning in March. The majority of those sick have been children younger than ten with most being toddlers.

The FDA learned of the outbreak from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on June 27, which had conducted an investigation of the illnesses with state and local health officials.

Typically Salmonella poisoning symptoms include: diarrhea; often with abdominal cramps and fever. Symptoms usually begin within one to four days following exposure. In persons with poor health and underlying conditions and infants, Salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause a life-threatening infection.

States reporting illnesses include: California (seven cases), Colorado (five cases), Connecticut (one case), Georgia (one case), Indiana (one case), Massachusetts (three cases), Minnesota (two cases), New Hampshire (two cases), New Jersey (two cases), New York (13 cases), Oregon (one case), Pennsylvania (three cases), Tennessee (one), Texas (one), Vermont (three cases), Washington (four cases), and Wisconsin (two cases).

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole
